Learn to Touch Type

This is for everyone who have asked me how I've learnt to type: two great sites where you can learn typing skills to improve accuracy and speed (and type without looking at the keyboard ie. "touch type").

Free Touch Typing Program, www.senselang.com
This is the sofware I used to learn touch typing (that was 7 years ago! My fastest typing speed so far is 73 words per minute, thanks Free Touch Typing Program!).

Pros:
  • No signing up required
  • Extremely small program size (277kb)
  • It works
  • You may learn to type at the website, instead of downloading the software
  • Includes lessons on some common symbols
  • No ads!

Cons:
  • Basic looking, no frills
  • No lessons on the numericals

Learn2Type, http://www.learn2type.com/

Pros:
  • Comprehensive lessons, including numericals
  • Get certificates of your progress
  • Typing tests available to measure your speed
  • Games to get you up to speed
  • Your progress is saved online

Cons:
  • No downloadable software to use offline
  • Ad-ridden (there is a wait of several seconds to display ads before lessons)
  • Invasive and distracting flash ads
  • Tests are cheatable
  • I don't think the test is that accurate (as the mouse is required to click the beginning and end of the test)
  • Signing up required (although questions are pretty non-invasive)

Overall, both methods are okay. The Free Touch Typing Program is useful for offline purposes, but the Learn2Type website is more comprehensive. If you don't mind the ads.
