Continuing my experimentations into the world of portable apps, the latest I installed (read: unzipped) onto my USB drive was Portable AbiWord.
Portable AbiWord is the award wining and critically acclaimed lightweight word processor similar to Microsoft Word.
Features:
- Multiplatform as available for Windows and Linux
- Interoperability with Microsoft Word, Palm, RTF, OpenOffice.org, word perfect, and html
- Advanced document layout: tablets, bullets, multiple collumns, endnotes, footnotes, headers and styles.
- Comes in many different languages and supports right-to-left or left-to-right text
- Installable plugins to expand functionality: thesaurus, document importers, image importers and text summariser.
- Only around 5Mb in size! (16Mb after installation)
AbiWord ran well on the computer at work (a Windows NT, Dell machine) and all the functions worked. AbiWord has many of the features MS Word has but the interoperability is a major plus. I had the choice of saving my documents as any of the formats listed above and I chose the Word .doc format. I was then able to open the document in Word hassle free. Printing documents using the networked printer also worked well.
Overall: Recommended 4/5. Thank you AbiWord developers! Keep up the good work.
Note:
- I originally wanted to use Portable OpenOffice.org as part of my "USB drive Portable Office", but OpenOffice is a whopping 85Mb to install.
- Read more on AbiWord here
- Download AbiWord (free) here:
- Download various dictionaries here:
- Be sure to read the instructions for installing plugins and upgrading the software before use.
- Cost of MS Office: Around £300. Cost of AbiWord or OpenOffice.org: Free. hmmm tough choice.

U mean u can carry the whole set of softwares in that little USB thingies? so, what's the min size they require?
It should be a bit slow since the computer needs to get data from usb then to CPU back... the speed might improve if the stick has it's own built in processor.. maybe la..
oh, u did said it's only 5MB... ok.
the total package is around 5mb (15mb when installed) but the .exe is only around several hundred K (like 111kb)!
ah, that's when you're wrong dyanna, so far ive tried vlcplayer, GIMP, firefox and thunderbird ... and they've all worked absolutely fine. absolutely.
it's almost like having your settings at home wherever you go -- extremely convenient.
my only complaint is that there is a slight delay for 10 seconds (firefox) and around 1 minute (GIMP) between clicking the icon and the program to fully open.
but otherwise portable apps are 200% recommended to all.
ps
imagine having a 2Gb usb drive.
you could store mp3s, some videos and all the portable apps above.
that's almost as good as having your desktop PC wherever you go.
there are also portable games, but i havent got time to test them yet.
