Wedding Anniversary 2006: Bridges and Punts

(19 August 2006) For our anniversary this year, yours truly brought the family away for the weekend. The wet, fickle weather didn't dampen our spirits (much) as we headed to our destination...

Picture of Puan Mama Sarah on the famous Bridge over the River Cam
---

Our destination was the Quayside
---

What could be more romantic on our anniversary than being chauffeured over a river (all the while imagining we're in Venice)? A tour would last around 45 minutes and would pass various interesting sites and buildings along the river. (Cost = £32 for all of us, not bad eh?)
---

These "punts" would be our ride for the day. We had the option to either have the boat all to ourselves (meaning: I had to "drive" the boat myself) or have someone to do it for us, while giving us a guided tour. Urm, option no. 2 please!
---

Look closely at the names of the punts and you'd notice some of them are the names of king's wives.
---

Sarah's tentative first steps on the swaying punt. Sarah was warned again and again to keep her fingers inside the boat, and to keep to the middle (unless we want to end up in the river).
---

Our "chauffeur". He would steadily propel the punt along the river, while trying to tell us the history of the place. The punter would guide the boat from the rear, using his long pole (please don't laugh).
---

The design of this building is based on a ship
---

The famous mathematical bridge, a so called "self sustaining" bridge. The bridge was built without any screws or nails. The weight of the bridge upon itself holds the structure intact. Mighty impressive construction!

We had a wonderful, almost perfect weekend (minus the weather, of course). Yes, we're very tired and the piggy bank is slightly more vacuous but the experience was, as they say, priceless. Overall we took over 800 pictures and Puan Mama Sarah and I are having a headache (only slightly weather induced) trying to sort out which pictures to upload to our blogs.

Alhamdulillah, we thank god we have the means, the energy and the time to make such travels, something we couldn't have done several years back.

Truly, an anniversary to remember for years to come.

Whoaaa lovely pics of Cam!!!
Yes I like Cambridge too. Went there several times when my ex-flatmate was living there. Brings back many good memories of summer barbecues, long walks, buttercups by the River Cam...

Am most impressed with the price of the punt. Apasal masa kitorang pergi dulu about 50 quid? Tu yang tak pernah pergi punting tu.

The Quay over there looks so much nicer than here in Singapore. Just rows and rows of boring pubs and restaurants. Spoils the view! Especially at night when the drunks come spilling out (into the river sometimes!).

Jaga2 Amar n Sarah.. nnt jatuh dlm air. Pandai swimming ke?

It could be my poor eyesight or the contrast of the picture, but your boat punter looked like Prince William himself! Ada iras kan? Or no?

same here in terms of pubs, restaurants & drunks relieving themselves everywhere but cambridge was pristinely clean. i say "pristinely clean" because a certain someone dropped her smarties all over trinity college and i just realised the smarties was the only litter in the whole place!

takut jugak atas punt tu. Amar & the hyperactive sarah nak pegi ke tepi utk main air. silap haribulan terbalik pulak. btw - i also thought that guy look like prince william. entah2 betul dia *gasp*

hehehe if only money grows on trees & these journeys are free:) your comment has inspired me to write a post! thanks dith;)

Er, that was the price quoted by my friend who lived there. The price of a punt with the punter, all to yourself. Hm... ke July harga lain?
